I’m convinced if you don’t cry at least once during The Last Five Years then you’ve never actually been in love and never truly had your heart broken. This production, directed by composer Jason Robert Brown, is about as good as this show is bound to get. Betsy Wolfe is serviceable and Adam Kantor is quite very very good. It’s not and will never be a great show, but it IS a series of great songs that trace the rise of fall of a relationship in a very universal way. Go see it if you have nothing better to do, but make sure to buy the Original Broadway Cast recording and save it for a rainy day when the person you love decides he doesn’t love you anymore. It’ll be a good friend to have nearby.

Let’s just jump right in: Leonardo DiCaprio’s Gatsby is fine, and benefits from the fact that a large part of this audience has grown up with him just like a childhood friend. Carey Mulligan’s Daisy serves her purpose. But man, Tobey Maguire does not have what it takes to pull off Nick Carraway, and what this story absolutely needs is a convincing Nick. You can get by with a false Gatsby because Gatsby himself is an elaborate rouse, but Nick needs to be real and we have to identify with him, and yearn with him, and ache with him. I do not ache for Tobey Maguire. Not since Wonder Boys.

There are remnants of the book I love in here hidden away. I’m sure I could find them if I wanted to. But the movie lacks a soul, and I spent the entire length of the film trying to find it. All I want to do now is read the book again, somewhere quiet, maybe on a lonely Long Island beach on an overcast day with the sky threatening to rain at every turn. But goddamn if I didn’t shed a tear at the end. How can you not? So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

The secret to a good science fiction movie is focusing on humanity enough that you forget it’s a science fiction movie. Everything that needs to be said about Jurassic Park is on display in the very final scene as the survivors fly away from that tiny island of ruined hopes and shattered dreams and smile at one another because they are so happy to be alive and to realize what is important and what matters in that totally cheesy Spielberg way that works so damn well. An inescapable part of being human is destruction, so thanks for those happy childhood memories, Steven. Who knew CGI dinosaurs were so damn heavy, amIright?

The Testament of Mary, May 4th 2013. This was an okay play with a great performance by Fiona Shaw, but one really has to wonder who the target audience for this production was supposed to be. The only people that care about Mary at all are Catholics, and Broadway is pretty low on Catholics and pretty high on Jews. That probably explains why it closed early. I could see it having a future in Eastern Europe, though, where Catholicism is still en vogue.

Cleaning out my dorm room and found all of these cards and trinkets from September 2012 to May 2013. Thanks for a really fun school year, Sleep No More.
